WHAT TO EXPECT
What are Crowns?
A crown may need to be fitted to protect and preserve the remaining natural tooth. They can be placed for multiple reasons:
Therapeutic
- Reinforce weak teeth
- Damaged or broken teeth
- Prevent teeth from cracking
- Support teeth with large or multiple fillings
- Generally, protect teeth that have been through root canals
- Cover dental implants
- Hold an adjacent dental bridge
Non-therapeutic
- Smile enhancement through the improvement of appearance, shape, or alignment
We take care to design your crowns to suit your face as a whole and to stand firmly with your existing teeth. Whether you are getting a single crown, a combination of crowns and veneers, or a mouth full of crowns, we take a strong aesthetic approach to design your teeth to suit your facial characteristics and your individuality.
What is a bridge?
Dental bridges quite literally bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth and can help fix or replace damaged teeth. The bridge itself is often cemented to the natural teeth alongside the gap or the implant within the spaces. Missing teeth can ultimately cause the remaining teeth to move or shift into the vacant space, subsequently causing a bad bite and potential misalignment of teeth. Bridges are used to prevent this possibility. They also aid everyday activities like chewing and speaking. Bridges may be recommended as an alternative option to dentures and implants.
At Dental Excellence, we use three types of dental bridges: traditional, cantilever, and resin-bonded, which is also known as a Maryland bridge. Get in touch to discuss these options with one of our experienced dentists to find out which option best suits your needs.

FAQS
What is the difference between crowns and veneers?
Veneers are a thin layer of porcelain designed to cover the front surface of the tooth, more often for aesthetic purposes. Crowns, on the other hand, cover the entire surface of the tooth, including back and sides.
Is a dental bridge right for me?
A bridge is a good option is your adjacent teeth already need some work done, or if you’re not a candidate for dental implants. The type of dental bridge used will depend on both the quality of the teeth on either side of the gap and the position of the gap.
What are the types of dental bridge?
There are three main types of dental bridge.
- Traditional: When you replace a missing tooth when a traditional dental bridge, it actually involves three teeth — the missing tooth, and the two teeth on either side of the gap. Here, the bridge is constructed as one piece, with the false tooth suspended between them.
- Resin-bonded: A resin-bonded or Maryland bridge is used when the teeth adjacent to the gap show little or no previous damage. A new tooth is generally made from porcelain and bonded with metal or porcelain bands to the teeth on either side of the gap using resin. This type of bridge is particularly suitable for the front teeth, where stress is minimal, and the bond can be made behind the teeth and out of view.
- Cantilever: Just like on an actual cantilever bridge, these bridges are anchored on only one side. They’re commonly used where there is a healthy tooth on just one side of the gap and are generally suitable for low-stress bridges, such as on the front teeth.
